I designed this for my 7 month old niece, Danika.
I discovered when I took Danika into the room I stay in while at my parents’, the only thing to I had to offer her to play with was a very plain, crocheted cotton coaster… she loved it!
The size and thickness of coasters make it easy for her to grasp and manipulate them. I made this one just for her. It’s bright colors and interesting shape should be quite stimulating for her little brain.
I hope to make more themed coasters for her in the future. ♥
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (I used Caron Wintuk in Christmas Red, Nutmeg, Jonquil and TLC Essentials in Falling Leaves.)
H hook
yarn needle to weave in ends
Body:
Rnd 1 - With brown, ch 4, join with ss to first ch to form a ring, ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join to 3rd ch in beg ch 3. (12 sts)
Rnd 2 - ch 3, dc in same st, (2 dc in ea st) 11 times. (24 sts)
Rnd 3 - ch 3 dc in same st, (2 dc in ea st) 23 times. (48 sts) Finish off.
Feathers:
Row 1 - (RS) With feather color, attach to body with 1 sc, 18 sc (19 total sc including sc used to attach yarn), turn.
Row 2 - ss in 1st st, (sk 2 sts, 7 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, ss in next st) 3 times, turn.
Row 3 - sc in 1st st, (hdc, sk next st, 7 dc in next st, sk next st, hdc, sk next st)2 times, hdc, 7 dc in next st, sk next st hdc, sc, ss to the ss, finish off.
Head:
Row 1 - (RS) With brown, (RS) attach with sc 3 sts to the left of feathers, 3 sc (4 total sc including the sc used to join yarn), ch 1, turn.
Row 2 - 4 sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 3 - 2 sc in 1st sc, 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 4 - 6 sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 5 - sc 2 tog, 2 sc, sc 2 tog, ch 1, turn.
Row 6 - (sc 2 tog) 2 times, finish off.
Beak:
Row 1 - (RS) With yellow, attach with sc to head, sc once more (2 sc total), ch 1, turn.
Row 2 - sc 2 tog, finish off.
Wattle:
*top stitch - insert hook where specified, pull up a loop through piece and the loop on hook.
(RS) With red, top st in same st on the head that you did the first beak st in, which will be the top of the beak. Then top st in the same st you did the 2nd beak stitch in, ch 2, finish off.
Feet:
(RS) Attach yellow with a ss to body (4 sts from bottom of feathers), ch 4, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ss in same st, finish off.
Repeat for second leg, 2 sts over (left of first leg).

This is a great pattern. I adapted it into a hotpad by making 2 circles (with and added round) and inserting an old cd... The Other turkey patterns I've seen were just not quite right. This one is perfect.
I think this would make a nice pet toy for Thanksgiving.. gonna save this for then.

Very cute, but I am having a problem getting my feathers to turn out right, when I do row 3, I end up with several unworked stitches from the second row - any suggestions for the mistake I must be making?

The only thing I can think of is if you perhaps made some extra stitches somehow in previous rows. You could count to make sure or rip it out and try following the pattern again.
I dont know how to do the top stitch and cant find the directions anywhere on the internet can you explain quickly? (It's to finish the waddle)

Just highlight the pattern part and paste it into a Word document and print that.

You could just use a larger hook and some chunky yarn or twine in a color similar. You could even just hold several strands of worsted together. Just be sure to do an internet search of what materials won't melt when in contact with hot dishes.

For those who wanted to print the pattern without all the side items...simply highlight the pattern by holding down the mouse and scroll to bottom..go to print and choose selection instead of pages or all, this will print your highlighted areas only...

I love this project, but I had trouble with the feather portion row 3. I did it numerous times and the row doesn't line up with row 2 with the stitches. Does being left-handed have anything to do with it.

I was having problem with the feathers but I figured out what was wrong. You actually use the sc used to attach yarn (so 19 is in Rnd 1 of feathers) and then in round 3 the typo "sk next st hdc" threw me off because there's no comma there. Hope this helps others struggling! :)

I can't get the feathers right. There's something wrong with the pattern (or maybe I'm misunderstanding it). Going to try again tomorrow.
To those of you having trouble with the feathers (including me), I just figured out the issues with the pattern. I'm so proud of myself! I wrote it all out and did some calculations. Here it is:
Row 1: same as pattern (19 sc)
Row 2: same as pattern (25 stitches)
Row 3: turn but do not ch
sl st (for consistency), hdc, sk 2, 7 dc, sk 2, hdc, sl st (in sl st from row 2), hdc, sk 2, 7 dc, sk 2, hdc, sl st (in sl st from row 2), hdc, sk 2, 7dc, sk 2, hdc, sl st
I wrote every stitch out but you'll notice the pattern.

I love the pattern, but I'm having trouble with the head I do fine until I get to row 5 where it says sc, 2sctog I'm coming up with extra stitches left and i sc 6. Please help

LOVE this!!! Perfect super-quick project to take to a friend's 3 month old on Thanksgiving Day. I made 2 identical and seamed them together by slip stitching all the way around. Reason: 1) I wanted it to be a stuffed toy (stuffed with plastic baggies, it krinkes!!) and 2) i DESPISE weaving in tails. SO i just pulled the tails into the middle and sewed it shut! Thanks! My feathers just weren't lining up and I couldn't figure out why. I'm fairly new to crochet so I wasn't sure if it was me or the pattern.
My feathers were too "holey", so this is what I did:Row 3 - sc in 1st st, (hdc, sk next st, 7 dc in next st, sk next st, hdc, sc next st), then for 2nd and 3rd feather: sc in 1st st, hdc next st, sk next st, 7 dc in next st, sk next st, hdc in next st, sc, in next st.Then ss to the ss for last feather at the end, finish off
